Insuring your house, its contents and your possessions
For most people their house or flat is their most valuable asset.
Working out insurance values for your home.
For buildings the
Association of British Insurers website (see the information zone for consumers) has a calculator for rebuilding costs on the majority of home types.
For contents we recommend a full inventory of contents and valuations and perhaps photographs for more specialist items.
Whether you keep these as paper documents or electronically such inventories are best stored or duplicated away from your home.
A reciprocal arrangement with a friend or family member will help ensure that in the event of serious destruction or loss you both still have a record should the worst happen.
